The operation of the spray dryer is relatively simple

Spray drying equipment can be configured for parallel flow, counter flow or mixed flow operation, and their operation is relatively simple. The slurry is atomized into the drying chamber in the form of droplets, and when these droplets come into contact with the warm gas, they dry into a powder.

The hot gases produced by the steam coil or the burner enter the cylindrical drying chamber at different locations, depending on the type of spray dryer. In a parallel-flow configuration, air enters from the top; in a mixed-flow configuration, air enters tangentially; and in a counter-flow configuration, air enters from the bottom.

Proper selection of the feed atomizer is critical, based on experience, but depends on the properties of the material to be dried. The three types of atomizers are:
*High pressure nozzle
*Dual fluid nozzle
*Centrifugal nebulizer

Any products removed from the chamber by the spent drying gas are separated from them by a cyclone or fabric filter dust collector. If desired, the exhaust gas can be further purified with a wet scrubber.

Spray dryers can also operate in a closed loop using an inert gas such as nitrogen as the drying medium.
