The Importance of Support Structures in Spray Dryer Installations

Feb 06, 2023

Determine if the supporting structure (foundation) is of sufficient mass and stiffness to allow the spray dryer to operate at or near equilibrium. Having no mass or stiffness results in abnormal vibration levels from normal operating forces, which shortens service life and increases the frequency of maintenance.

The foundation must be able to withstand the applied load without settling, buckling or crumbling. The basis of spray dryer engineering is usually a concrete or structural steel structure. For these installations, pour free-standing concrete pads of sufficient mass and stiffness to support the spray dryer train and absorb the forces resulting from normal operation. The total foundation mass and its associated supporting structures shall be at least five times the total rotating or moving mass of the unit.

Some spray dryers must be installed on the interlayer. Generally, these spray dryers do not have adequate support structures. Also, mounting directly on concrete or deck floors can cause resonance issues. Normal operating forces are transmitted directly to the floor, which acts as a sounding board and amplifies these energies. In the best of circumstances, these amplified energies simply result in higher than normal noise levels. In many cases, they coincide with one or more natural frequencies of the spray dryer or foundation and can cause serious chronic problems.
