Design and usage characteristics of coolers in fluidized bed dryers

After being processed by the cooler in a fluidized bed dryer, the material floats on a cushion of air or gas. The process air is provided to the bed through a perforated distributor plate and flows through the solid bed at a sufficient speed to support fluidization. Pellets weight in state. Bubbles form and collapse in the fluidized bed of material, promoting vigorous particle motion. In this state, the solid behaves like a boiling liquid. Due to the close contact between the individual particles and the fluidizing gas, high heat and mass transfer rates are obtained.

The design of the distribution plate ensures that the fluidizing gas is evenly distributed over the entire area of the bed and the gas velocity is such that only very fine portions of the material are carried to the dust collection equipment. High turndown ratios of production capacity are possible, fluctuations in feed rates are easily absorbed; in most cases, no moving parts come into contact with the product.
