The spray dryer contacts the hot gas stream containing the gaseous impurities with the aqueous medium containing the impurities of the absorbent to produce a gas stream of reduced impurity content and dried powder product. The device consists of a chamber formed symmetrically around a vertical axis and an atomizer located on the upper part of the chamber for delivering a finely dispersed spray of the aqueous medium, a duct for delivering a hot gas flow to the chamber The chamber and a gas injection device are adapted to receive the main part of said hot gas flow from the duct and introduce it in the circumferential direction with respect to the atomizing device. The gas injection means impart axial and angular velocity components of the hot gas flow whereby the hot gas flow swirls downward through the main part of the chamber.
The device provides a bypass arrangement for introducing a small portion of the hot gas discharge into the chamber at a tangentially extending radius from the extraction duct for a small portion (approximately 5 to 25% by volume) of the hot gas flow and A conduit is drawn from a vertical axis and in a substantially horizontal plane. An essential feature of the invention is that a small portion of the hot gas is introduced into the chamber in a direction counter to the direction of the vortex flow of the hot gas downwards through the main part of the chamber.
